Telia started it generative AI initiative almost a year and half ago, where we started with data platforms to accommodate AI workload. During 2024, we are now gaining the fruits of these efforts.

We succeeded in building strong data platforms in both cloud and onprem to help the organization to host and run GenAI applications and even host open source LLMs inside Telia data centers.
We succeeded in implementing multiple GenAI use cases, most important ones are:

– LLMs gateway/library: we built LLMs gateway where using one endpoint, our users can get access to all LLMs we host in our infrastructure (Azure, Bedrock, onprem..etc). This abstraction layer helped the AI developers to easily integrate any LLM in their applications.
– RAG as a service, easier self-service for creating chatbots, i.e. customer support chatbot, confluence documentation chatbot and RFPs chatbots.
– Marketing content generation: empowers content managers and copywriters to produce instant, tailored copy for multiple channels and audience segments
– Metadata generation service: leveraging GenAI to generate column descriptions for datasets. This implementation has been featured during AWS summit and also publicly in AWS customer show case ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wItg1P0zqF0)

The efforts in building such advanced capabilities on both data platforms and applications level throughout 2024 has a huge positive impact in our colleagues day to day work, by improving their productivity using AI and also enhancing our customers experience using our communication channels.

The AI Lab, a team of around 10 individuals, focuses on AI innovation, particularly Generative AI, within the pharmaceutical space. They have developed an internal Generative AI platform and contribute to projects spanning the entire value chain, from research to commercial applications.

Development: The AI Lab has improved access to clinical documents using multi-agent frameworks, streamlining data retrieval and analysis. This enables non-experts to access and analyse clinical data with natural language. This work has been recognized by Microsoft in lightning talks.

R&ED: The AI Lab developed the R&ED Chat, an advanced tool based on the multi-agent framework and connected to several internal/external research databases. It empowers researchers by simplifying information discovery through natural language queries, enhancing data-driven research.

Commercial: We collects extensive medical insights from healthcare professionals (HCPs). The AI Lab created a RAG-based Q&A application allowing frontline professionals to ask questions and receive generated answers from the insights, improving how we interact with with HCPs. Over 90% of users find it highly relevant, with a business value of over €2.5 million per year. The solution is live in over 35 countries.

Established in early 2023, the AI Lab at Novo Nordisk aims to harness (especially) Generative AI technology within the pharmaceutical domain focusing on creating impactful technical solutions.

The focus in 2023 into 2024 has been to
advertise the Data & AI Strategy as well as to hands-on work with the business to integrate the data goals into their business goals
initiate execution of the strategy on low hanging pain points to build a cache of success stories
showcase a clear red thread of 1 business goal or pain point being resolved through the help of Data & Analytics

The above point 3 is easier said than done since high level business goals are complex and are supported by multiple functions and underlying goals that jointly ensure success. Thus, among the top 4 business goals for Volvo Penta (Business Growth, Customer Success, People and Sustainability) we chose Sustainability as the area to deep dive and focus on.

Sustainability as an area is a green field, with concrete key results and relatively straightforward. Volvo Penta’s top goal within Sustainability is -40% reduction in CO2 emissions. Sudharshan worked together with the other Heads of Data within the Volvo Group to break down the top level Sustainability core business goals into components where Data & Analytics can support.

This has led to extremely positive buy-in from all the Heads of Sustainability within the Volvo Group and focused implementation of various D&A activities (data quality, governance, data engineering). The various areas within Data (Data Governance & Management, Information Architecture, Data Products, Data Literacy, APIs) are also harmonized and working together towards a common business goal. We have seen very good results in holistically working with all areas of Data for a given use case area which also lead to easier adoption by our business as well as manageable workload on the company.

As part of that transformation the tool, Renki, translating into farmhand or helper, was born. Futurice’s expertise in AI-assisted rapid development and human-centric design enabled the creation of a tool that integrates seamlessly into daily tasks, saving approximately 155 hours per week and boosting operational efficiency by 20%. Renki balances advanced AI features—like transcription, article analysis, and headline performance prediction—with journalistic integrity, designed to aid, not replace, creative work.

Futurice’s close collaboration with Viestimedia ensured a pragmatic approach to AI that resonates with journalistic values. The technological prowess and agile methodology of Futurice’s team were critical in moving directly to tool development, bypassing proof-of-concept, and rapidly scaling Renki for maximum impact. Renki now stands as a scalable, ethical AI model in the media sector, setting a new standard for innovation, that respects both operational needs and ethical standards.

Viestimedia’s Renki project, powered by a close partnership with Futurice, exemplifies the transformative potential of Generative AI in media—bridging the gap between ethical journalistic practices and operational efficiency. Facing resource constraints, Viestimedia turned to Futurice to create a practical solution that could empower their team. Futurice’s expertise enabled rapid development, moving directly into tool production and providing a support-first AI that respects journalists’ creative autonomy. The result is a tool that suggests headlines, automates transcription, and aids image selection, with a final say always left to journalists.

Futurice’s strategic approach tackled key challenges—streamlining workflows while supporting journalistic integrity. With their guidance, Renki saved Viestimedia over 150 hours weekly and improved alignment across teams, notably between editorial and social media. This impact was evident by 2024, with a 20% gain in efficiency and a 67% adoption rate among journalists.

Plan International Norway is a humanitarian organization focused on children’s rights and gender equality for girls. As part of the global Plan International network, they work to combat poverty and promote education, health, and protection for children in over 80 countries. Plan International Norway partners with local communities to provide children, especially girls, with opportunities to live safe and empowered lives, supporting sustainable solutions that enhance their futures.

BearingPoint is an independent management and technology consultancy with European roots with a global network that spans over 70 countries and 13,000 people. BearingPoint operate in three business units: Consulting, Products, and Capital.

Plan International Norway has had a partnership with BearingPoint for more than 10 years. BearingPoint has assisted Plan in areas such as strategy, machine learning and recently also within Generative AI. More specifically, BearingPoint developed an application using Generative AI to compile large textual information and semi-automatically create and submit a complex donor report. During the fall 2023 a MVP (minimum viable product) was developed by replicating a donor report submitted in 2022. During the Spring of 2024 the application was used to submit the final report to the donor with great success. Hours spent on the report was reduced by 90%, the quality was at the same level and our way-of-working changed.

BearingPoint applied its extensive Generative AI expertise to pioneer a digital solution for the reporting process of Girl’s Get Equal, one of Plan International Norway’s programs. The program, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development (Norad), includes six developing countries: Bangladesh, Nepal, Malawi, Niger, Tanzania and Uganda. The main objective is to reduce the incidence of child marriage through different activities: (1) Providing girls with education, (2) Increasing knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights among youth, (3) Assisting girls and families in avoiding marrying off daughters to increase family income, (4) Mobilizing communities to change social norms and practices related to early marriage for girls, and finally (5) Contributing to strengthening laws and policies related to child marriage and child protection, and implementing them. The total budget for the program is NOK 250mill over 5 years.

The project team built an innovative application that allocates tasks between people and AI. The AI scans the source documents, pulls out relevant information, and then organizes it in information blocks. Plan International Norway’s staff can work with the information blocks and iterate on the AI-generated drafts to produce different chapters in the report. The chapters merge into the final report, summarizing information on various donor requirements, like outcomes, cross-cutting issues, and significant deviations.

The impact for Plan has been considerable. 3500 hours were spent on the report in 2022, whereas in 2024 the number was reduced to approximately 300 hours. This means that Plan’s expert resources can spend their time where it really matters and not compiling large amounts of text and rewrite it to a report.
